After two SUVs and an electric station wagon, the Chinese brand is moving up a gear in the category of so-called “clean” vehicles with this compact sedan 4, opening up a whole new platform. This will not only result in a range of models from 4 to 5.20 m in length, but the technical solutions are already announcing high-level service at a bargain price. This means that the newcomer’s catalog has something to fear about all the other electric cars on the market, but also about classic petrol ones. The basic version with a 170 hp engine and 51 kWh battery costs 28,990 euros, or 22,990 euros after deducting the state premium of 6,000 euros.

The proposal is all the more interesting as the MG4 ensures its appearance with a style of its own and a seriously finished interior, where we find in particular a dashboard made of flexible material, well-defined screens as well as enveloping seats, soft and upholstered, on our Luxury model, with a well-made faux leather cover.

In addition, the Chinese know how to create a beautiful living space with large openings that make it easier to access the bench. In this respect, its ultra-thin battery integrated into the floor (11 cm thick, like that of the Mégane E-Tech) guarantees absolutely correct roof clearance when the car is rather low. We also appreciate the large and numerous storage spaces, as well as the standard double trunk floor, which allows to obtain a flat floor when the rear seat backs are folded down.

The rear passengers will appreciate the large entry openings, the soft seat that supports the thighs optimally, the generous legroom and the numerous pockets for wallets.  On the downside, overhead lights, grab bars, and air vents are absent, and there's only one USB socket.

Everything is not rosy, because the rear passengers will find neither air vents nor ceiling lights nor grab handles on the ceiling. On the other hand, the unintuitive steering wheel controls and the confusing menus of the screens make navigating the instrument cluster and the multimedia/GPS system difficult. Finally, the loading volume seems a bit tight: 350 dm3 only against 385 dm3 for the ID.3, 440 dm3 for the Mégane E-Tech and 412 dm3 for the Peugeot 308 petrol engine. It has to be said that like the Volkswagen, the MG4 embeds its powertrain under the boot floor.

Cargo volume is slightly below the category average, but a double floor can line up with the seatbacks folded.

While the entry-level 51 kWh model drives its motor with a lithium iron phosphate battery, the 64 kWh models have opted for a nickel manganese cobalt battery with higher energy density (only 30 kg more for 29% more storage capacity ), but less durable (3,000 estimated charge cycles instead of 7,000). This does not prevent our MG4 from also having a 7 year or 150,000 km warranty.
